The title of this post is a quote that I love to pitch out there. As I get older, the heavier my grudge grows toward the sunrise, bird song, and dewy grass. They say that the sunrise is underrated, but do you know what I think is underrated? Sleeping til 10:00 AM, then having a beautiful cup of coffee.
And yet, in spite of my spite toward mornings I’ve found that there really is something compelling about the early hours of the day. The quiet, the ability to focus, the lack of pressing appointments all give wonderful room for prayer, meditation, and consideration of the day. I’ve found in my working life that an early morning (read “morning when I don’t hit the snooze button six times”) leads to a more productive day of strategy. I have the bandwidth to consider the day and to get ahead of the wave of the crushing urgent. It’s amazing how much different a surfer looks when he rides the wave versus when the wave rides him.
So to all you night owls out there, consider the sunrise. Yes it might be annoying, but it can be the vista from which you take hold of your day to win it and turn it to the glory of God. Victory can be within your grasp, and getting an early start on it never hurts.
