Sky Surf

Often when I’m outside walking, I’m amazed at how the sky seems to mimic the ocean. It’s amazing to me how the clouds flit and flow just like I’ve seen the sea on a stormy day. Or watching the dull and calm constant waves pressing from side to side. It’s like watching two sisters, the sky and the sea.

While this might feel artistic, oddly it’s really more of a physical thing. I mean, realistically what we see in the sky is water and wind interacting. This is the same as what we see in bodies of water on land, so why wouldn’t it do the same thing in the sky?

But the thing that stops my thought process is how well this mirrors the human spirit. We will often stop and daydream on what life would be like if we were in a different place, a different position, a different time. We slack away our insecurities and reactions, and think of how much different we would be. But the reality follows the cliche, “Wherever you go, there you are.” Much like the sky surf, even when we find ourselves in different environments and different conditions we are still the same people. We will make choices based on our reasoning, our circumstances, our histories, and our spirit. Thus whether above or below, we remain the same people.

And yet, this is where grace steps in. We were created uniquely with both our virtues and our faults. God has made everything beautiful in its time and has set eternity in our hearts, yet we cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. That is to say, we have the ability to display beauty no matter where we are. We still must grow through our sin no matter where we are. We still walk with our Savior no matter where we are.

So the next time you look to the sky and smile at the sea above, remember that whether we rise or fall, the quality of our lives is the presence of the only One who can change everything.
